What were some of your earliest music memories or inspirations?
Growing up, my dad hung up a curtain in the basement, and that quickly became my first stage. I loved putting on shows with singing, dancing, and, of course, multiple costume changes. My first favorite singers were Hilary Duff and Hannah Montana. They were the blueprint!
What do you find rewarding about teaching?
No two lessons are ever the same, and I love that! Each student brings their own voice, goals, and musical style, so I get to tailor lessons just for them. I also love lightbulb moments when something really clicks and you can see the student light up. That shared “aha!” moment is the best feeling.
Do you have a favorite memory from your experiences teaching? What about favorite performance memories?
Some of my favorite teaching memories are from hosting student recitals and group musical theater performances. It’s amazing to watch students take what they've been learning and bring it to life on stage.
A recent performance that I'm proud of is my solo voice recital, Silly Little Love Songs, where I sang a collection of my favorite pop, rock, country, and musical theater songs. It reminded me why I love performing and why I love helping others do the same.
Any tips or tricks for aspiring vocalists?
Always come back to the breath! Breath is your foundation; it powers your voice, supports your tone, and helps you sing with freedom and ease. Being consistent with diaphragmatic breathing can be tricky, but it is a crucial element of powerful and healthy singing!
Was there an instructor who was particularly memorable to you?
I was very fortunate to have incredible teachers who inspired me to pursue music education. I went to Naperville North High School, which has a flourishing curricular choir and show choir program. I also studied with private voice and guitar teachers who helped me find my voice and prepare for music school. Their belief in me is something I try to pass on to every student I teach.
What is your favorite movie or musical soundtrack?
I love the soundtrack for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It's such a unique fusion of orchestral music with hip hop and rap. A must-watch!
What would be your dream concert?
My dream lineup is Lady Gaga, Charli xcx, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Queen, and Fleetwood Mac....People who would have never played together, but a girl can dream!
I love artists who push boundaries and bring something unique to the table. My taste is all over the place, and I love that—whatever genre a student is into, I’m here for it.
