Name: Harley Figueroa Title: Director of Scholastic Programs Instrument of choice: Saxophone |
What were some of your earliest music memories or inspirations?
I took the "mandatory" piano lessons growing up in my family, and I hated it, LOL! They took place on Saturday mornings, when the best cartoons were on. But one night I heard Joshua Redman playing on the Jerry Lewis show, and I was hooked. The way he spoke through that horn inspired me!
Any tips or tricks for aspiring performers?
Be respectful, be on time, dress to the nines, learn your part and play every gig like it's the last one you will ever play, because you never know when it will be.
I got to do a couple of performances with Gloria Estefan (a long time ago). She was one of my idols and to meet her and observe how humble and nice she was just taught me that there's no excuse for being arrogant. Be humble and be kind, always.
Find your sound and style and stay true to it. Don't let anyone tell you any different.
Was there a band or orchestra director or instructor who was particularly memorable to you and why?
My High School Band Director, Paul Alexander. He was very tough on me, but it was tough love and he knew I needed that. He inspired me to dig deep and better than I thought I could be.
What is your favorite thing about your role with PM Music?
I love working with new Directors that are on their first teaching gig. I love guiding them through their recruiting process and helping them have a successful one. Working with so many different Districts and Directors through the years has helped me observe what works best, and I love passing that information along.
What are some things you think all music, band, and orchestra students should know?
Prioritize sound and intonation first. If you can't play in tune and sound good, it won't matter how fast or how many notes you can play.
Go-to coffee order?
DD's Large Iced (or hot) Coffee with Almond milk. No Flavor!!
Favorite movie or musical soundtrack?
The Soundtrack to the Original Movie, Gladiator by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard. It was performed by the Lyndhurst Orchestra. CHECK IT OUT!!!
So much passion and emotion in that music.
Favorite spots in the Chicago area for live music?
In the Summer, the Cubby Bear for Live Salsa Bands!!
The outside stage at the Salt Shed is great. Great sound and awesome view.
Thalia Hall in Pilsen is amazing!!
If you haven't caught a concert at one of these spots, you're missing out! :-)
